When You Feel Forgotten

TONIGHT'S SCRIPTURE

“Never! Can a mother forget her nursing child? Can she feel no love for the child she has borne? But even if that were possible, I would not forget you! See, I have written your name on the palms of my hands. Always in my mind is a picture of Jerusalem’s walls in ruins.”

Isaiah 49:15–16 (NLT)

SOMETHING TO PONDER

Several years ago, I felt sure God had forgotten me. My marriage had ended, my heart was destroyed, and my mind was in a perpetual state of panic. Overall, my life was a mess.

I was drowning in a sea of difficult circumstances, confusion, and pain. With each gasping breath, God seemed farther and farther away. I prayed, but God seemed silent, so my emotions began playing tricks on my mind, causing anxieties and fears to get the better of me. Instead of feeling God’s presence and the strength to trust Him, I felt alone and abandoned in every way. I knew that wasn’t the right way to feel as a Christian, but I still felt forgotten by Him.

Maybe you are experiencing a season of life right now where you feel the same way: tossed aside, rejected, abandoned, disappointed, unwanted, or alone. Maybe you are wondering if God has forgotten you.

We all experience these feelings at one time or another. Maybe you are a little girl—or even a grown woman—who desperately wishes her daddy would love her, an employee who longs for the approval of her boss, a woman who would give anything if her husband would pay attention to her, or one whose husband has walked away. Maybe you feel forgotten by friends or family during a busy holiday season, and loneliness and painful emotions threaten to steal your joy. Although there are countless reasons for us to feel rejected and abandoned in this broken world, feeling forgotten by a sovereign God can hurt the most.

Yet Isaiah 49:15–16 speaks directly into that fear. God asks whether a mother could forget the nursing child she loves. Even if such a heartbreaking thing were possible, He says, “I would not forget you.” Then He gives us an unforgettable picture of His constant care: He has written our names on the palms of His hands. We are always before Him and continually on His mind.

God’s words do not dismiss our pain or pretend our circumstances are easy. Instead, they anchor us in what remains true when our feelings tell us otherwise. Silence is not absence. Waiting is not rejection. Pain is not proof that we have slipped from God’s sight.

When we find ourselves feeling forgotten, we face two choices. We can turn away from God in anger and frustration and develop a sour attitude, or we can step forward in faith and choose to believe what He has said about His love for us.

Despite our heartache and overwhelming emotions, we can remember that God truly is our help and that He is always there, never forsaking us, even when it feels like it. The hands that hold our names are the same hands that hold our lives.

If you are feeling forgotten—by others or by God—let your hope swell and your joy return by intentionally believing that God will never leave you and is always by your side. Make a commitment to focus on His presence and the blessings He has given you, and let Him be the source of your joy. You are His child. You are seen, known, loved, and never forgotten.

YOUR NIGHTLY PRAYER

Dear Lord, I have been feeling forgotten and alone in this world, and at times I have felt forgotten by You, too. Sometimes I feel like I’m not important enough for You to care about my troubles or my needs. Forgive me for doubting. Help me remember that You have written my name on the palms of Your hands and that I am always on Your mind. Fill my heart with the joy of Your presence. I commit today to seek You, put my hope in You, and praise You even when I’m struggling. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

THREE THINGS TO MEDITATE UPON

1. God’s remembrance is rooted in His love. My circumstances may make me feel overlooked, but God’s love is stronger and more dependable than my feelings.

2. My name is written on His hands. I am not a passing thought to God. I am continually before Him—seen, known, and held close.

3. God’s silence does not mean His absence. Even when I cannot see what He is doing, I can choose to trust His presence, His character, and His promise never to forget me.
